In this course, students will perform fraction and decimal operations, understand ratio concepts, and use ratio reasoning. Students will also write, interpret, and use expressions, equations, and inequalities. Geometry problems involving area, surface area, and volume will be explored. Lastly, students will describe and summarize data distributions and understand variability.
advanced math 6
This course is an accelerated math course involving student progression through all of the Grade 6 math content and half of the Grade 7 math content. In addition to the Grade 6 math content, this course will also explore Grade 7 math content including performing integer and rational number operations, generating and solving one and two-step equations, and using proportional relationships to solve multistep ratio and percent problems.
In this course, students will perform integer and rational number operations. Students will understand proportion and scale drawing concepts, and use percent proportion reasoning. Students will also write, interpret, and solve expressions, equations, and inequalities. Geometry problems involving area, surface area, and volume will be explored, along with the construction of angles, triangles, and quadrilaterals. Lastly, students will understand and compare samples and populations, along with finding theoretical and experimental probability with simple and compound events.
advanced math 7
This course is an accelerated course that covers the remaining units of 7th grade math curriculum (that were not covered in 6th grade advanced) and all of 8th grade math content. If a student was in 6th grade advanced mathematics and exhibited mastery, the student will automatically be enrolled in 7th grade advanced mathematics. If mastery of this course is determined, the student will advance to Honors Algebra for their 8th grade year.
This course builds on student's study of proportionality. In the 7th grade students begin to develop the concept of functions and how to explore and represent them with tables, equations, and graphs. Students analyze linear functions and solve linear equations. These equations include those with infinitely many solutions, no solutions, or one solution. Also, linearity is extended to include systems of linear equations. Understanding of linearity and functions is further developed by examining nonlinear functions including exposure to inverse variation, exponential patterns of changes, and quadratic patterns of change. Exploring exponential functions also prompts the use of scientific notation and rules of exponents.
Honors Algebra 1*
In this course students continue their study of linear functions. Students will solve, graph, and write linear functions, as well as study systems of linear functions and other appropriate applications. Students will also deepen their study of exponential functions - including growth, decay, and other real world applications. Students will complete the course through an introduction to polynomials and quadratic functions.
The Sixth Grade Math Support Class provides time each day to examine the math concepts that are taught in the regular sixth grade math classroom. This course supports growth in both student math performance and confidence. In this small class setting, we review the current math class concepts, practice for upcoming assessments, and preview the math topics that will be taught in the near future.
If a student is not currently enrolled in the advanced mathematics program and is interested in being considered they should make an appointment with a counselor.
*Middle School courses that address the MDE High School Curricular requirements will count towards high school graduation and credits. However, middle school grades will not be included in the high school GPA.
